Scotland: A pilgrimage of granitic proportions

Abstract

Scotland is the birthplace of both geology and curling. Naturally, the journey to Scotland is considered a pilgrimage for many geologists and curlers around the world. In 2020, Derek had the opportunity to complete a pilgrimage of granitic proportions, researching curling stones as part of a Masters by Research at the University of Edinburgh. In this presentation, Derek reflects on his chapter abroad in Scotland, from geology and curling, to travel and culture.

Bio

Dr. Derek Leung is an Assistant Professor in Critical Minerals at the University of Regina. He completed a BSc in Earth Sciences at Laurentian University (Sudbury, ON) in 2019, an MScR in GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh (Edinburgh, UK) in 2021, and a PhD in Mineral Deposits and Precambrian Geology at Laurentian University in 2025. Derek spent his youth collecting some rocks and throwing others, and he now investigates the chemical and structural diversity of rock-forming minerals. In his spare time, he works on eclectic projects related to 3D printing, pop-up books, and writing.
