Abstract
Come along on a virtual expedition to the field as we explore geomicrobiological delights right here in
Saskatchewan. We will visit the microbialites of hypersaline lakes in the west, as well as iron mats south
of Moose Jaw. I will also give a quick summary of current research in my lab group on metal(loid)
remediation and behaviour in mine wastes. I hope to pick your brains a bit on additional localities for
microbial mat studies and bog iron. I will bring rocks!
Bio
Dr. Joyce McBeth is a geomicrobiologist and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences
at the University of Regina. Her research focusses on microbial interactions with the geosphere, and her
research projects include studies of metal(loid) transformations mediated by microbes in mine wastes
and remediation systems, and microbial impacts on microbialite formation. In addition to her research,
Joyce’s greatest calling is to teach, learn, and evolve in her role as an Earth science education.
